FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Mount Wilson Observatory?

Mount Wilson Observatory is located in the San Gabriel Mountains, just outside Pasadena, California. It is visible from Los Angeles in relation to the nearby cluster of television transmitter towers. It is about forty-five minutes by car from downtown Los Angeles. Detailed directions can be found on the Visiting page.

When is the event?

Saturday June 3, 2017 from 10 AM – 1 AM
Sunday June 4, 2017 from 10 AM – 7 PM

Do I have to pay to attend?

KNOWLEDGES at Mount Wilson Observatory is free and open to the public. Tickets are required for special music performances and celestial viewing sessions through the two large telescopes, and are available on the Tickets page. All other programs are free.

We encourage you to consider making a donation to help offset the costs of mounting the event. KNOWLEDGES is an independent artist-run organization.

What about parking?

There is ample parking at the Observatory. An Adventure Pass is required for each vehicle parked on the grounds because the Observatory parking lot is within the Angeles National Forest. The Adventure Pass is $5 per car for one day or $30 per car for one year. More information and directions may be found on the Visiting page.

Do I need to bring anything?

The event is outdoors primarily. Plan as you would to spend a day on a mountain walk. We recommend to dress in layers–it can be hot during the day and chilly at night, wear sturdy shoes, bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, a hat or sunglasses and cash. Limited concessions are available. Please read the Visiting page for more detailed information. Please be aware the Observatory is at an elevation of 5,170 feet and its century old facilities are non-ADA compliant.

I can’ t make it to the show, can I still see the work?

Our mission is to create events that engage the public in direct experience with art and site. While we encourage you to come experience for yourself, we understand that is not possible for everyone. We will post documentation on our website, Instagram, and Facebook page. Please visit the Artists page on our website for individual project descriptions and documentation.

Can I visit the Mount Wilson Observatory at other times?

Absolutely – the Observatory is open to the public 10 am – 5 pm every day, weather permitting, and by special appointment. For a nominal fee, you can take a docent-led tour on the weekends, departing at the Cosmic Cafe at 1 pm, or download a PDF for a free self-guided tour. More information is available on the Mount Wilson Observatory website.
